Purananooru - First 15 Songs (English Translation)

1. Hymn

Lord Siva has worn a garland on his head which is made up of Konrai flowers which blossom in the rainy season. The garland on his desirable , beautiful chest is also made up of Konrai flowers. His vehicle is a white bull. His best, beautiful flag is adorned with that bull. His neck is adorned by a stain which is due to the poison eaten by him. That stain is praised by the priests who recite vedas. On the left side of his body he has a female structure. He can hide that female structure inside him. The crescent moon adds beauty to his forehead. The crescent moon is praised by the eighteen demons. He has a decorated pot on his head which does not know dryness. He has a beautiful long untidy hair. He has a beautiful penance appearance. Let us worship his feet. -Bharatham padiya Perundhdhevanar

2. A Song About Seraman Perunjchottrudhiyanjcheraladhan

The soil filled earth, the sky which the earth holds, the wind that touches the sky,the fire which is grown by the wind and the water which differs from the fire are the five big natural things. Oh king! You have the tolerance to bear those who scold you. You have the vast conspiracy to destroy your enemies. You have mercy. The sun which rises in the eastern sea of your country sets in the western sea which has a white head. You have such a vast country which gives new income. You are the king of that good country. You have a fame which has gone up to the sky. The hundred people who had worn Thumbai garland made up of gold, had taken the land of the five people who had horses with moving manes. They fought with these five people with angry and died in the battle field. In that war field you give rice in large quantities to the soldiers of both the armies. Though the sweet milk becomes sour, the day becomes dark and the path of the four vedas change, you live a stable life with the unchangeable relatives and great fame. In the hill side ,the big eyed female deer sleeps with it's small headed young ones in the light of the sacrificial fire which is created by the priests who do their later evening duties. You live like the Himalayan mountain which has gold like hills and like the Pothigai hill. -Muranjiyur Mudinahanar

3. A Song About Pandiyan Karungai Olavaal Perumpeyar

The high white umbrella which looks like the full moon ,saves the earth which is surrounded by the sea by giving shadow. The drum used by the army sound the victory loudly. Oh King! You are the successor of Pandiayas. You are ruling in the righteous way. You have a kind heart. Without fail you are giving the wealth to the poor. You are the husband of the Kopperumdevi who has faultless chastity and has worn best ornaments. You have a male elephant which has an ornament made up of gold on its forehead. It has a face with dots. It is so strong that no one can go near it. It has a sweet smell. It uses its tusks as weapon and destroys the fort doors of the enemies. It has bells tied with ropes on its sides. It has a long trunk. Sitting on its neck you are doing the job of Yama. You are having a shining sword in your black hand. Oh Vazhudhi! You have great fame. Even if the world becomes upside down, you don't fail in your words. You have legs with anklets made up of gold. You have a very broad chest which has the smell of the sandal. In the very long path where there is no villages and no water, the cruel robbers are seeking for the passengers. On the arrival of the passengers, the robbers kill them by arrows without fail. Their dead bodies are inside the stones. The beautiful winged, bent beak eagles on the Unna trees feel sad because they cannot eat the flesh of the bodies. The path is so fearful to go through. But the beggars will come through that cruel path with a desire to see you. It is because you will remove their poverty on looking their face even if they don't ask anything. -Irumpidarththalaiyaar

4. A Song About Sozhan Uruvappahrer Ilanjechetchenni

The sword which is used in many victorious wars, with blood stain, looks like the red sky. The anklets dash with the enemies' legs in the battle field demise and look like the horns of the bullock which has the strength of killing. The holes in the armor made by the arrows resemble the stable aims. The horses which are sent on the enemies when they are turned left and right, cannon makes wound and have blood shedding red mouths like the red mouth of the tiger which bites the deer's neck and drinks the blood. The male elephants damaged the fort doors with their tusks. So the sharp tips of the white tusk have become blunt. They look like Yama, who kills takes the lives. You are on the chariot which is made up of gold. The chariot is drawn by horses with moving manes. You are looking handsome like red sun, which rises from the big sea. You have so much strength so that the people of the enemy country will suffer without food like the motherless child. -Paranar

5. A Song About Seramaan Karuvooreriya Olvaal Kopprunjcheran Irumporai

Oh King! You have a country with forest where the elephants are roaming in between black rocks like the cows grazing in between the buffaloes. You have the fame of not conquered by the enemies. As you are incomparable, I tell you one. You don't join with those who remove mercy and kindness and who go to hell. You save your country as he mother saves her child. This merciful act is a great boon to the king. -Nariverooththalaiyaar

6. A Song About Palyaahasaalai Mudhukudumip Peruvazhudhi

In the north there is snow covered high Himalaya. In the south there is frightening Kumari river. In the east there is the sea with waves dashing against the shore. In the west there is ancient sea. You are the king of the vast country. Your fame is spread to the world which is below the earth and which is rich in water. It is spread to the world which is above the Heaven. You are like the balancing point of the weighing balance and never support one side. Let your people and army be well. Your warriors will enter into the enemies' country like sea. They ride elephants with dots on their faces and having small eyes. They seize forts surrounded by green fields. You give the ornaments seized in the forts to those who come to get gifts. Let your umbrella be lowered only when it goes round the temple of Shiva who is worshiper by sage, who have learned four vedas. Oh lord! Let your crown dry by the smoke raised by burning your enemy's country. Let your anger go away before the shining faces of the ladies who have worn shining ornaments. Oh Mudhukudumip Peruvazhudhi! You have success which has conquered all successes. You have endless giving quality and many noble qualities. You live stable in this world like the moon which spreads cold rays and like the sun which gives shining rays. -Kaarikizhaar

Oh King! You have feet which drive the elephants' legs which have worn anklets, convex hands because of sending arrows repeatedly, beautiful bow which attracts the eyes, the broad chest which is liked by Thirumahal, who neglected the chest of other kings and the strength of fighting elephants. You are burning the countries not considering night and day. Though you hear crying voices in the fire which is burning village you want to wage wars. So, there are no good things in those countries. Oh king of the fertile land! The countries you destroyed are fertile where they shut down the cold water which comes breaking the bank with fish, instead of shutting down with sand. -Karunkuzal Aadhanaar

If you ask who is he, he is Kopperunarkilli, wearing an armor made up of tigers' skin which is torned by arrows. He has a shinning beautiful chest. He will come on an elephant which kills the enemies like Yama. This elephant which belongs to him is like a ship which goes in the sea. It is like the moon amidst several stars. Now it is mad and it cannot be controlled by its driver and goes while the warriors with swords have surrounded it like sharks. He who on the elephant is the king of the country where the farmers collect the feathers of the peacock which are withered away in the field along with the paddy. There are fatty fishes. There is thick toddy. His fertile country is surrounded by water. Oh Seramaan! Let him go without any harm. -Anonymous

14. A Song About Seramaan Selvakkadungo Vaazhiyaadhan

Oh King! You have the strength to control the killing male elephant which has angry eyes and which destroys the pillar to which it is tied. It is controlled with thotti which is made up of gold and it obeys to your orders. You have the strength to drive the horse so that it jumps off the big pits which are filled with water. You have the back which has an alabaster. Standing on the chariot you are capable of sending arrows by bending the bow which rests in the scar made by the chord of the bow. Your hands which are up to the knee which gives valuable ornaments to the poor are strong. We eat the food by roasting meat with fat in the sweet smelling smoke. We don't know other jobs except eating. Oh lord! You have broad chest which gives unquenchable desire to ladies. You have strength like the big earth to your enemies. You win the wars like god Murugan. Our hands know only eating, so they are soft. -Kapilar

15. A Song About Palyaahasaalai Mudhukudumip Peruvazhudhi

Oh Vazhudhi! You destroyed the streets where the chariots run by ploughing with white mouthed asses. In the fertile lands where the birds twitter, you drove chariots which were drawn by horses with white manes, convex hoofs and destroyed them. You destroyed the lakes by sending elephants which have moving big necks, frightening eyes, broad feet and sharp tusk. You are so angry in defeating your enemies. The enemies come with shields made of gold and long vels have a desire to attack you. They retrace and live with blame. You erected so many pillars after doing never-vanishing best velvis, by adding ghee, puffed rice etc, according to the rules that are found in the harmless four vedas. Oh lord, the muzhavu which is tightly tied is played and the female singer sings your fame. In the following two which is greater? Either the victorious wars? Or noble velvis? -Nettimaiyaar
