Purananooru - 61 to 70 (English Translation)

61. A Song About Sozhan Ilavandhigaippalli Thunjchiya Nalangkilli Setchchenni

The farm maids have tied up hair adorned with cold leaves. They weed out aambal plants and neidhal plants which grow among the crops. In the fertile field the malangu fishes are squirming. The farmers eat vaalai fish curry with rice stomachful. They amaze where to store the paddy ears. The small headed children of the strong handed farmers do not like to eat coconuts. They climb up the heap of paddy and try to pluck the palm fruits. Setchchenni has long hand with vel and has beautiful chariot. His fertile land has new income everyday. He has worn colourful garlands which look like rainbows on his chest. Those who come to fight against him know their end. We don't see those who fight against him who has pillar like shoulders escape and live. Like that, we also don't see those who obey him suffer. -Madhurai Kumaranaar

62. A Song About Seran Kudakko Nedunjcheralaadhan And Sozhan Perunarkkilli

It is very ignorant to think that we will get victory in the coming war. The black devil dig the wound of the dead warriors and stroke their hair with their blood stained hands and hear the mild sound of the drum played by the ladies. The eagles will be circling to eat the dead bodies. In this cruel war both the kings who fought died. Their white umbrellas fell down. The victorious drums perished. The army camps which were filled with warriors became empty. The war which frightened those who saw ended like this. The ladies who lost their husbands in the war did not eat even greens. They did not bathe . They laid down embracing the dead bodies of their husbands. The warriors fought in such a way so that they became the guests of heaven where there are Suraas who have garlands which do not dry, eyes which do not wink and amudham as their food. Oh warriors ! Let your fame live. -Kazhaaththalaiyaar

63. A Song About Seran Kudakko Nedunjcheralaadhan and Sozhan Perunarkkilli

So many elephants died by attacked with arrows. The horses having victorious fame died with their warriors. The chariot warriors died as their shields hid their eyes. The black faced victorious drum which was covered with the leather of the bull which was not shaved laid without players. The vels pierced the sandal applied chests of the two great kings and they were dead. There is nothing more to worry about. Their fertile land has vast places where the ladies who had worn bangles made up of the stem of aambal plant ate rice flakes and played in the water. These two lands were perished due to the war. -Paranar

64. A Song About Paandiyan Palyaahasalai Mudhukudumi Peruvazhudhi

Oh Virali wearing a few bangles ! Start with your yaazh, parai and muzhavu. In the vast army camp where herds of elephants are fighting, there is the flesh of the enemies which stop the eagles from going up. Let us go and see Mudhukudumi Peruvazhudhi who fought against the enemies and had great fame. On seeing him we can leave this mean life of eating gruel. -Nedumpalliyaththanaar

65. A Song About Seramaan Perunjcheralaadhan

The muzhavus lost being pasted with soil. The yaazhs forgot music. The broad , big pots laid without persons who chyrn curd as there was no milk. Without drinking honey the relatives were bverysad. There was not the farmers' ploughing sound. It was why that village had lost its festive beauty. On the full moon day, though the moon and the sun appear in the east and west, the sun sets in the mountain in the evening. Like the disappearance of the sun , the brave king felling shame sat with his sword and left his life as he had got wound on his back. So for us who live without him, the day too will not pass sweetly. -Kazhaaththalaiyaar

66. A Song About Karikaal Peruvalaththaan

Oh successor of those who sailed in the vast sea knowing the nature of the wind ! Oh Karikaal Valavaa having big elephant army ! You have succeeded in the war showing your strength. But your enemy who left his life in the Venni battle field feeling shame for the wound on his back and got great fame is better than you who succeeded in the war. -Vennikkuyaththiyaar

67. A Song About Kopperunjchozhan

Oh male annam ! Oh male annam ! The full moon is shining in the country of the king who gets success in wars. In this evening I am suffering alone. You have eaten the ayirai fish in the Kumari and going to the Himalayas. If you go to the Sozhanaadu on your way, you stay in the high storey of the Uraiyoor with your young mate. You go through the entrance and enter into the palace. You tell to Kopperunjchozhan that you are the servant of Aandhaiyaar of Pisir. If you say like that, he will give many good ornaments for your mate to wear. -Pisir Aandhaiyaar

68. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

Oh Paanaa ! You are playing your yaazh and singing a song which can be enjoyed by a few. You don't see people who quench your relatives' cruel hunger who are like the skeleton of the monitors. What are you doing here ? The Sozha king obeys the soft ladies who wear golden jewels on their chests, but he controls the strong men. Like the milk that springs in the mother's breast when the child sucks, the river Kaaviri flows in the Sozhanaadu. It has no inner enmity. There is no enmity due to the bad omens of the birds. So the enemies decided to fight in between themselves and to die. As they drove the chariot beating the drums, the drunkards' trembling hands make the toddy spilt on the ground. The spilt toddy makes the soil muddy. On hearing the sound of the drum, the elephants without mahouts stand in the mud to fight. Our noble king has braveness. He lives in Uraiyoor. You go to him. He is the only one who can give much wealth so that you need not go others' houses and sing. -Kovoorkkizhaar

69. A Song About Sozhan Kulamuttraththu Thunjchiya Killivalavan

Oh Paanaa having perfectly made yaazh ! You have cruel hunger which cannot be quenched in your stomach. You are wearing rags, which is wet by sweat, on your waist. You are wandering throughout the world with your relative who are suffering due to poverty. If you come near me and ask me who will remove this poverty, I will tell you. Fighting elephants suffer because of the wound. In the army camp with flags, elephants are killed. Sozhan Killivalavan has a strong army. He is the lord of Uraiyoor. He is having the vel for fighting . He has the nature of attacking enemy countries. He has worn shining jewels which shine like fire. If you reach his high gate way, you need not wait there. There Killivalavan will be giving chariots to the beggars throughout the day. Certainly you will get golden lotus as gift. So you go to him to get rid of your poverty. -Aalandhoor Kizhaar

70. A Song About Sozhan Kulamuttraththu Thunjchiya Killivalavan

Oh Paanaa having a small yaazh which sounds as sweet as honey ! You are saying to me to stay here for some time and take rest hearing the udukkai which looks like a tortoise pierced with an arrow. Like the cold pond water in the month of Thai, the big city has food which does not decrease even it is taken again and again. This city knows the fire which is used to cook. It does not know the fire which will destroy. Killivalavan produces two kinds of medicines . i. e food and water. The beetles blow the white aambal buds. You go with the smiling Virali who has beautiful forehead and paadhiri smelling hair who lives in Pannan's hut who is a patron. If you go like that , you will get much wealth. It is not the treasure which is found by a person who has gone to bring fire wood. You need not doubt if you will get. It is certain that he will give. You will get it certainly. So go and get the gift. Let his fame live long. -Kovoor Kizhaar

Purananooru - 56 to 60 (English Translation)

56. A Song About Paandiyan Ilavandhigaippalli Thunjchiya Nanmaaran

Siva has ox flag, fire like red hair and blue coloured throat. He is holding a mazhu. Balaraaman has the colour of the beautiful sangu born in the sea. He has a killing plough and a palm flag. Thirumaal has a beautiful body like the pure sapphire and has an eagle flag. Murugan has a rooster flag and a victorious vel. He has a peacock as his vehicle. Among these four gods , you are like Siva in anger, Balaraaman in strength , Thirumaal in fame and Murugan in finishing what you wish. As you are like the god for that action, there is nothing impossible for you. You are giving valuable jewels to those who come to you with a desire to get gifts. Oh Maaraa having victorious fame ! You drink the wine imported from Greece daily. It is served in golden cups by beautiful ladies. Like the red sun which drives away darkness from the beautiful sky and the crescent moon which appears in the west you long live with stable fame. -Madhurai Kanakkaayanaar Mahanaar Nakkeerar

57. A Song About Paandiyan Ilavandhigaippalli Thunjchiya Nanmaaran

Though they are illiterate or scholars, you save them who praise you like Thirumaal. Oh Maaraa ! You have plenty of fame which cannot be told. I will tell you one. Let your warriors take the yield of your enemies' fields. Let them destroy their big towns by lighting fire. Let your vel, which shines like the lightning, kill your enemies. But you don't cut down the guarding trees because they are tender trees. They are not useful to tie up your strong elephants. -Kaavirippoompattinaththu Kaarikkannanaar

58. A Song About Kuraappalli Thunjchiya Perundhthirumaavalavan And velliyambalaththu Thunjchiya Peruvazhudhi

Oh Sozhaa king ! You are the lord of Kaaviri which has cold water. Paandiyaa king is like a young bull of the Paandiyaa dynasty. He did not loose his heart as his ancestors had passed away. He saved the fame of his dynasty like the prop root of the banyan tree which supports it when its foot has completely perished. Like the thunder which kills the snakes, he destroyed his enemies in his young age. Oh Sozhaa king ! You are the king of Uraiyoor where righteousness grows. Paandiyaa rules multi storeyed Madhurai. There paddy and water are easily available to everybody. In Madhurai there ae rarely available Podhigai sandal and Korkkai pearls. He is ruling Madhurai where three kinds of drums are sounding and where Thamizh is growing. If you both who have strength be together like this, the enemies will afraid. There is no other scene sweeter than this. If you both sit together , it will resemble Balaraaman who has milk like colour and palm tree flag and Thirumaal who has sapphire like colour, sitting together. Listen to me. Let your fame live long. Let you be helpful to each other. If you both stood like this, the world which is surrounded by the sea having sounding waves will be yours. You go in the righteous path. You stand in favour of justice. You keep good characters established by nobles. You don't listen to the evils' words which will bring enmity among you. Let your friendship be like today. Let your vels get fame because of your victories in the wars. Let the enemies' countries which have hills have the symbol of the tiger which has bent lines and the symbol of the fish which lives in water. -Kaavirippoompattinaththu Kaarikkannanaar

59. A Song About Siththira Maadaththu Thunjchiya Nanmaaran

Oh Paandiyaa king having beautiful chest with long pearl garlands and long hands which touch the knees ! You are so strong in showing kindness. You never know to speak lie. You are like the hot sun which rises fron the sea to your enemies, but you are like the cold moon to the poets like us. -Madhurai Koolavaanihan Seeththalai Saaththanaar

60. A Song About Sozhan Thirumaavalavan

The red star shines in the sky as the light which is lighted in the boat in the sea. On seeing the full moon the peacocks dance joyfully. I and the Virali, who has worn some bangles , who were coming through the forest way saw the full moon and worshiped it several times. Our lord Sozhan Thirumaavalavan is like a bull which is capable of pulling a salt loaded cart from the seashore to a mountain land. He has victorious drum and sword. We worshiped the full moon thinking that it is the white umbrella erected by the Sozhaa to hide the sun. Now we are seeing his white umbrella. It is not necessary to tell us to worship it. -Uraiyoor Maruththuvan Dhaamodharan

Purananooru - 51 to 55 (English Translation)

51. Paandiyan Koodakaaraththuth Thunjiya Marran Vazhudhi

Is there is a hurdle to prevent a big flood if it springs wildly ? Is there a safe place to escape and hide when there is a big fire ? Is there any shadow which has a power of preventing a big storm ? Like that when Maaran Vazhudhi got anger not bearing to hear that the cold Thamizhnaadu is common to the three kings and came to war. The kings who obey and give tribute can live without sorrow. Those who refuse to give tribute are pitiable. They loose his kindness. Their life will vanish in a second like the vanishing life of the winged termites which come out from the nests of the earth which are built by the white ants with hard effort. -Iyoor Mudavanaar

52. A Song About Paandiyan Koodakaaraththuth Thunjchiya Maaran Vazhudhi

The stong tiger in the cave which is in the mountain which has high peaks and goddesses, hates being idle and goes for hunting to get its prey. Oh Maaran Vazhudhi ! You are like that strong tiger. You fought a big war so that the kings of the north were destroyed. You have a beautiful chariot. If it is a war begun by you with a desire , there is none to stand against you and escape in this world. The countries of your enemies who oppose you will become waste forests and vanish. Their towns will be filled with the odour and smoke while roasting the fish. Their fertile lands will loose their new income. There will not be any worship. The altars will become useless places. The old people will be gambling. The wood hens which have dots on their feathers will lay eggs where ever there are pits. -Marudhan Ilanaahanaar

53. A Song About Seramaan Maandharanjcheral Irumporai

The spread white sand looks like the pearl in the matured shells . The shining gems are fixed in the storeys. The ladies who have worn beautiful bangles, gathered to dance kuravai dance in Vilangil town. The enemies tried to stop their dance. You defeated them and removed the sorrow of the dancers. You have the honour of having strong elephants and fast running horses. If we elaborate your fame, it will go on increasing. If we try to tell it briefly, it will go on growing. Poets like me cannot tell it fully ever. Your fame astonishes us. Though your fame is vast in this world where so many scholars have born. We should not stay saying that we could not do. It will be nice, if Kapilar, who has the ability of writing many meaningful poems very quickly , is alive now. You feel that you are not lucky enough to have him today. Though Kapilar is not alive, I will sing your fame got by defeating your enemies as much I can. -Porundhil Ilangkeeranaar

54. A Song About Seramaan Kuttuvan Kodhai

The town in which our king Seramaan Kuttuvan stays and rules is an ancient town. It is easy for the poets only to enter into his town at any time like the people of that town and enter into his courtyard proudly. Kuttuvan Kodhai has the quality of giving to the beggars so that the rainy cloud will feel shame. If his enemies think that they can also go like the poets, they will perish like the shepherd , who has worn dirty clothes, garland made up of leaves and folded lips to whistle, wishes to go with his flock of sheep which have small heads, near the forest where the tiger lives and dies. -Konaattu Erichchaloor maadalan Madhurai Kumaranaar

55. A Song About Paandiyan Ilavandhigaippalli Thunjchiya Nanmaaran

Lord Siva has a sapphire like throat. He made the big , high Meru mountain as a bow and Vaasuhi snake as a chord. He destroyed the three forts with a single arrow. He has worn the crescent moon on his hair. On his beautiful face, there is an eye on the forehead. You are like that forehead eye of Lord Siva and you are above all kings. Oh Maaraa wearing garland and having fame ! The kingdom which has the big four army is a good kingdom. The four armies are: 1.Fighting elephants which have much anger 2.Horses which run fast 3.Big chariots which have long flags 4.Warriors who have strong will. The greatness of the kingdom depends upon its righteous rule. The king should not bend the scepter to hide the crime of one who is his favorite . He should not think to punish one without considering his good qualities as he is a stranger. Oh king ! You shine like the red sun which gives light commonly. You give cold light like the white moon. You give gifts like the rain. You give those who come to you saying that they have nothing, without saying “No”. Oh great king! You live long. In the Thiruchendur town white waves are destroying again the seashore. Oh king! You live billions of years than the spread sand. -Madurai Marudhan Ilanaahanaar.

Purananooru - 46 to 50 (English Translation)

46. A Song About Sozhan Kulamuttraththuth Thunjchiya Killivalavan

Oh Valavaa! You are the successor of the Sozhaa dynasty which has pure, kind heart which removes not only the suffering of the pigeon but also the sufferings of other living beings. These children belong to a noble family which fears to see the poverty of the scholars and which wishes to live by sharing. They have no fear for the elephant which is about to kill them and laugh clapping their hands. They are afraid of the big court. They are suffering from a strange fear. Is it fair to kill these children? I have told you enough. You do whatever you want. -Kovoorkkizhaar

47. A Song About Sozhan Nedungkilli

the poets will reach the patrons after traveling several long ways as the birds go in search of fruit trees. They sing so that their tongues suffer and get gift for that. They do not think to save it for themselves. They feel happy in living by giving Will they think evil to others? Certainly they won't think evil. They feel proud on defeating scholars in debates.. Longing for the gifts is their life. They have high fame and plenty of wealth like you. You know that they have the efficiency to defeat many scholars and to become the leaders. -Kovoorkkizhaar

48. A Song About Seramaan Kokkodhai Maarban

Thondi is a place having seashore parks which are smelling like honey because of the garlands worn by Kokkodhi Maarban , the garlands worn by the ladies who married him and the neidhal flowers which blossomed in the big back water. That Thondi is our town. On old man! Oh beggar speaking the truth! If you go to that Seraa king to get gifts, you tell that you have seen a poet who sang his fame on your way. -Poihaiyaar

49. A Song About Seramaan Kokkodhai maarban

Shall I call Seramaan Kokkodhai Maarban who has a long sword as one belongs to Kurinji, or one belongs to Marudham ,or one belongs to Neidhal where the cold sea which has singing waves. How can I call him? When the guards of the thinai fields of Mullai beat thattai to drive away the parrots, the birds in the paddy field where the ears are ripen and the birds in the sea which has large quantity of water fly together due to that sound. -Poihaiyaar

50. A Song About Seramaan Thahadoor Erindha Perunjcheral Irumporai

Not knowing that it is a war drum which was made out of strong tree, adorned with the feathers of peacock, sapphire garland, uzhingai flower made up of gold and which is kept safe has taken for holy bath and not knowing the cot on which small flowers are spread is the cot for the war drum , I have slept on it. But you did not kill me with your sword. It is an evidence for your greatness of knowing Thamizh. Instead of getting angry with me , you come closer to me and with your gem like beautiful shoulder, you fanned me so that cold wind touches my body. Oh victorious king! Do you do this to prove that those who have fame in this world alone have the happiness in the heaven? -Mosikeeranaar

Purananooru - 36 to 45 (English Translation)

36. A Song About Sozhan Killivalavan

The ladies who worn silambu and beautiful bangles sit and play kazhangu with pieces of gold on the sand heaped near the Porunai river. The tall trees with full of flowers fall down making the white sand scatter as they are cut by sharp axes made by the blacksmith who has strong hands. Though the sound of the falling trees is heard by the king, who is behind the tall walls of the fort, he does not do anything. He has not the will power to oppose the enemies. It is shameful to think fighting with such a coward wearing victorious garlands and sounding brave murasu. I don't know whether you will kill that cowardice king or you will let him alive. Select which ever is suitable for your greatness. I have nothing to say to you. -Aalaththoorkkizhaar

37. A Song About Sozhan Kulamuttraththuth Thunjchiya Killivalavan

Oh king! You invade your enemies' countries like a cruel snake which has poison, sharp teeth and five heads. Like the thunder which destroys the big mountain covered by green creepers, you have fired your enemies' towns. Oh the successor of Sembiyan who had victorious vel and brave army! You have the power of destroying deep ahazhies which have many crocodiles which try to eat the images of the guards thinking that they are human beings, walls which are like copper and forceful elephant army. Oh great king! You born in a famous family which removed the sorrow of a pigeon. What a great power do you have! -Maarokkaththu Nappasalaiyaar

38. A Song About Sozhan Killivalavan

Oh great king having powerful army which has colorful flags which wave up to the sky as the warriors have sit on the elephants which are like hills. If you look with anger that place will burn in red fire. If you look with cool heart that place will shine like gold. You have the power to make the hot sun into cold moon and the cold moon into hot sun which is like a fire planet. Is it necessary to say how we are living under the shadow of your white umbrella? Those who live in heaven where the heavenly park which blossoms with golden flowers ,enjoy pleasure according to their good deeds. As there are no poor people they cannot enjoy the pleasure of giving to the poor. Though the persons who seek heavenly pleasure and gifts live in your enemy country, they will always thinking you and your country. -Aavoor Moolangkizhaar

39. A Song About Sozhan Killivalavan

Oh successor of Sebiyan who sit on the balance which is made up of the tusks of the elephant which has mortar like foot, in order to remove the sorrow of a pigeon! You have born in a family which feels happy in giving to others. It is your nature to give happily without saying no to those who come saying that they have nothing. So there is nothing special in praising you in this aspect. On thinking the great strength of your ancestors who destroyed the strong hanging forts in the sky which are fearful to Devaas who are the enemies of Asuraas. Your victory over your enemies does not bring new fame to you. As ethics prevails in the court of your brave capital city Uraiyoor, your good rule does not bring fame to you. Oh Killivalavaahaving victory over wars, having strong shoulders which are stronger than the kanayaa tree, having beautiful kanni and having fast moving horse! How can I praise you? You destroyed Seran's Karuvoor which has a very strong, safety fort. The Seraa engraved his bow on the top of Himalaya which is very high and where golden rays of the sun fall. He has a beautiful victorious chariot. I don't know what else I can praise as I have praised your great efforts. -Maarokkaththu Nappasalaiyaar

40. A Song About Sozhan kulamuttraththuth Thunjchiya Killivalavan

Oh Killivalavaa ! You destroyed the safety forts of your enemies. The crowns of your enemies are adorning your feet as kazhals. Oh strong and victorious king ! Those who scold you bow down their heads with shame and worship your feet. Those who praise you get fame and greatness. We will see you with happy ever as you are today. Oh king ! You speak sweet words and you are sweet to us. Oh king you are having a very fertile land . A small piece of land where a female elephant sleeps is capable of cultivating food for seven male elephants. Oh king ! You live for ever. -Aavoor Moolangkizhaar

41. A Song About Sozhan Kulamuttraththuth Thunjchiya Killivalavan

Even Yamaa who kills the lives awaits for the proper time. But you have the strength to kill warriors who have vels, whenever you wish. You have the strength to fight with your enemies so that they see forebodes which are fearful to see in the dreams like meteorites fall on all eight directions, green trees becoming dry logs, the sun with hot rays appear in many directions, birds making awful sounds, teeth falling on the ground, others pouring oil on the heads, riding on the pigs, removal of dresses and the cot on which shining , strong weapons were kept falling broken. In the countries in which you invade, the warriors afraid on seeing your strength. In order to hide their fear and sorrow from their ladies, they kiss their children. The countries of your enemies will be spoiled like the forest surrounded by fire and wind. -Kovoorkkizhaar

42. A Song About Sozhan Killivalavan

Oh king having patronage which cannot be measured and strength to win fearful wars ! Your elephants look like mountains. Your armies roar like seas. Your sharp vel shines like the lightning. You are so powerful so that the enemies obey and worship you. Removing our sorrow is not new to you. It belongs to the family in which you born. You hear only the falling sound of the water falls. You never hear the sorrowful voice of the beggars even in your dream. Like the tiger guards its cubs, you save and rule your people. Your country has new income which brings fame to you. The vaalai fish which is caught by the reapers, the tortoise caught by the farmers, the honey which is gathered by the sugarcane cutters and the kuvalai flowers which are brought by the ladies who went for fetching water are given to the guests from Kurinji and Mullai by the hosts of Marudham and Neidhal. Oh lord belonging to such a town! Like the rivers that born on the mountains run towards the sea, the poets who wish to get gifts come to you only. In order to give them the gifts, you started with kanichchi like the angry Yamaa to capture the lands of Seraa and Paandiyaa who oppose you. Oh Valavaa! You live long. -Idaikkadanaar

43. A Song About Sozhan Maavalaththaan

Even the sages who do penance in the morning and evening, having ere wind as food and bearing the sun's hotness, in order to remove the sorrow of the people , wonder on the act of the king sitting on the balance to rescue the soft walking pigeon which surrendered to him from the sharp nailed and bent winged eagle without thinking of his demise. Oh king! You are the successor of that king. You are the younger brother of Killi who has the fame of defeating he enemies and has much wealth and chariots . Oh lord of the warriors who have long arrows and bent bows! Oh lord having fast running horse and patronage! I doubt your birth. Oh lord wearing aaththi garland! Your ancestors never hurt Brahmins. I asked you is it fair to do like this ? Though I scolded you, you did not get angry with me. You felt ashamed as if you had done a mistake. You made everybody to realize that tolerating the wrong doers is the unique quality of the Sozhaas. I am the one who did the wrong. Oh brave king! Let your living days grow more and more than the sand of the Kaaviri river. -Thaamappal Kannanaar

44. A Song About Sozhan Nedungkilli

The black female elephants do not bathe but play in the ponds. They do not eat the balls of rice mixed with ghee. They break the pillars to which they are tied. They roll on the ground with sorrow and trumpet like thunder. The children are crying without milk. The ladies do not wear flowers. They comb and tie up their barren hair. It is harmful to you be here even after hearing the crying sound for drinking water. Oh lord having a horse which cannot be reared ! If you wish to save ethics, you say to Nalangkilli that this fort is his and open the door of the fort. If you wish to show your braveness come out to fight with him. Without doing these two things, it is a shame to hide yourself in a corner of a fort which is shut. -Kovoorkkizhaar

45. A Song About Sozhan Nedungkilli And Sozhan Nalangkilli

Oh kings ! The person who has come to fight with you is not Seran who has worn the garland made up of the white flowers of the palm tree. He is not Paandiyan who has worn the garland made up of neem flowers got from the black branches of the neem tree. Your kanni is made up of aaththi flowers. The person who has come to fight with you is also a Sozhan who has also worn aaththi garland. Among you who ever is defeated, your family fame will be lost. Winning both of you is impossible. So it is not suitable for your family fame. Oh kings having chariots with victorious flags! Avoiding this vain war, which gives only physical pleasure will give you greatness. -Kovoorkkizhaar

Purananooru - 26 to 35 (English Translation)

26. A Song About Paandiyan Nedunjchezhiyan

In the broad, deep sea the ship which was blown by the wind, runs piercing the water. Like that the elephants ran through the army and made way. You went through that way with your shining vel, fought with them so that they lost their strength and captured their murasus. Due to this you got victorious fame. You arranged the heads of your enemies as oven, poured their blood as cooking water and put the flesh and brain in it. You used the shoulders of the dead warriors who had worn brave bracelets as ladles and cooked the food. With that food you had done so many battle velvies. Oh Sezhiyaa The nobles who have reasonable listening knowledge , strong mind which controls the five senses and learned vedaas have relationship with you. The petty kings are serving you . You have done several righteous velvies. Oh king having victorious vel! Your enemies are also good in one aspect. Though they died in the war with you, they had gone to the heaven. -Maangudi Marudhan

27. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

Like the hundred petals of the red lotus which grows in the mud, many kings born in high families without any difference . But among them those who got the fame of being praised by all are a few. Like the lotus leaves so many died without any use. Oh our father ! I have heard from the wise people that those who got the praise of the poets and did their duties well would get the aircraft which was not driven by the pilot. Oh Nalangkilli ! You realize that those which grow will diminish and those which diminish will grow and attain fullness. Those who born will die and those who die will born is the nature of this world. You made all to realize this. Though they are the Devaas or others who come with hunger , you give them whatever they need with kindness and mercy. Let your enemies be without kindness and mercy. Let them be without the quality of giving to the poor. -Uraiyoor Mudhukannan Saaththanaar

28. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

The following eight are the big defects of people who live in this world. 1.Blind 2.Born with defective parts 3.Born with bend 4.Dwarf 5.Dumb 6.Deaf 7.Having the appearance of the beasts 8.Born without wisdom. Wise people say that there is no use fom such defective people. Let me tell the nature of the human beings who are useful. Your enemies have run and hid themselves in the forest where the round lined and red dotted wood hens which crow and awake the guards of the thinai fields. You think that it is a gift to give to those who are away from the fence and ask eagerly. You have a fertile land, where the people cut and throw the sugarcane and they damage the lotus flowers in the pond. It looks like the dance theater of the Kooththaas . You realize that the wealth is for securing ethics, money and pleasure. You also realize that if you forget to secure ethics, you will forget you from human beings without defect. -Uraiyoor Mudhukannan Saaththanaar

29. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

Let your court be filled with Paanaas who have worn golden garlands made up of golden lotuses on their barren black heads. Let your broad chest with sandal powder be embraced by your kind wives after praised by the Paanaas. Let the murasu be sounded in the beautiful courtyard of your palace. Let punishing the evil and showing mercy to the good be done by you continuously. You should avoid those who refuse that there is no fruit for good deeds and suffering for the bad deeds. Your warriors drive away the birds which come to the paddy field. They light fire on the palm leaves and roast the fish caught from the back waters. They eat fish and drink sour toddy. They nave a fertile land where there are tender coconut shedding coconut trees. It is your duty to rescue your warriors from living a mean life like your enemies who live in small huts. It is also your duty to make your warriors to give who come begging. This worldly life is like the dancers who assemble in the festival, dance and disperse after the festival. In this unstable life , let the people around you and your relatives be happy. Let the wealth earned by you be praised by all. -Mudhukannan Saaththanaar

30. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

There are many who have scientific knowledge . They know the path of the sun, the movement of the sun, the earth that is surrounded by the movement of the sun, the direction through which the wind blows, the sky which is above without any hold. They know the nature of the sun, earth, wind and sky and describe about them. But you are with so much of knowledge and self control so that even the people with wisdom cannot know you. You have a hidden strength like the stone which is kept in the cheek of the elephant which is to be spitted. The senseless Paradhavaas let the vessels from the sea to the river without lowering the sail and unloading some goods. As they do so, the things brought by them are scattered throughout the way. You are the lord of the fertile land which has such a sea income. -Mudhukannan Saaththanaar

31. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

Due to the excellence of ethics, money and pleasure are placed after it. Like that the victorious umbrellas f the Seraa and Paandiyaa are placed after the victorious umbrella of the Sozhaa which shines like the full moon. It spreads the fame of the Sozhaa fa r off. Oh Sozhaa ! You wish only victorious fame got from brave wars. You wish to live in war camps and do not wish anything else. Your fighting elephants are awaiting for attacking the walls of the enemies' forts so that the edges of their tusks become blunt. They never keep quiet. Your warriors who have won kazhals feel happy if war comes. They are without fear though the enemies' countries are far away among the forest. So your enemies are shivering without sleep, thinking that you will come to the northern side with your army after celebrating your success . They think that you will eave the eastern sea and reach the western sea so that the waves of the seas wet the hoofs of your horses. -Kovoorkkizhaar

32. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

Sozhan Nalangkilli is able to give Vanji where long flags are waving ,in order to fill up the food vessels of his people and keep them content. He is able to give Madhurai which has many storeys as a gift to the dancers who have bent bangles, bamboo like shoulders and beautiful foreheads who praise him. So oh poets !. Come . Let us praise him. Like the clay which is put by the Kuyavaa children on the wheel gets the shape of the desired vessel, this cold , fertile land lives according to his command. -Kovoorkkizhaar

33. A Song About Sozhan Nalangkilli

The hunters who live in the forest and who have hound give basket full of deer flesh. The shepherds give potful of curd. The farmers' houses are filled with deer flesh and curd. The ladies in the farmers' houses fill up the baskets of the hunters and the pots of the shepherds with white paddy which grow on the banks of the pond. The hunters and shepherds take them happily. You are strong enough to invade the fertile Paandiyaa country, destroy the seven forts and security. You are strong enough to engrave your big mouthed tiger symbol there. So poets are praising you. Your war camps surrounded by the bulls and are near to the common place where the shepherd ladies dance kuravai dance. There the rice balls with the flesh which look like the garland made up of the buds of Mullai with fresh leaves are received by the Paanaas with desire. The ladies and gents resemble the dancing allippavaies done by the artisan go through the beautiful parks. No one go there single. The dinner festivals celebrated by you in the storeys by killing sheep is very fine. -Kovoorkkizhaar

34. A Song About Sozhan Kulamuttraththuth Thunjchiya Killivalavan

There is compensation even for those who cut the breasts of the cows, those who do abortion to ladies who wear beautiful ornaments and those who make their parents worry. The ethical books say that even if the world becomes upside down, there is no compensation for those who forget gratitude. Oh lord of the lady who has worn beautiful ornaments ! Our group eats the rice of varahu cooked with milk and mixed with honey in the morning and evening. We also eat the fatty, warm flesh of the rabbit. We willingly converse with the Paanaas who have frank hearts, in the common place where there are ilandhai trees. Oh Killivalavaa ! You give large quantity of wealth to those Paanaas who are eating good food happily. If I fail to greet you and praise your good feet, the sun will not appear. I am a simple person. I will not do mistakes. If it is true that the good deeds done by the nobles will be stable, you long live more than the droplets shower by the rainy cloud which forms on the Himalaya. -Aalaththoorkkizhaar

35. A Song About Sozhan Killivalavan

Oh king ! You are the only person who has the greatness to be called as king among kings who rule the fertile Thamizhnaadu which is in this earth which has blue seas as boundary and which is spread up to the sky where there is no movement of the air. Your country is the only fertile country which has the greatness of being fertile even if the sun appears on all the eight directions and hurts with its hotness. Though the Venus appears in the south , the cold , beautiful Kaaviri river runs through several canals and makes the land fertile. The sugarcane with white flowers look like the fence made up of vels. Oh king having greatness and fertility ! Listen my following words which are for your good. The justice given by you without any deviation from ethics is like the rain which showers in the expected time. Your white victorious umbrella, which is up to the sky where there are rainy clouds , is not merely an umbrella which protects the hotness of the sun. It is the one which removes the sorrows of your people/ it is the symbol of kindness and it showers mercy. Oh Killivalavaa having a sharp vel ! Your enemies are like the young palm tree which is cut into many pieces. You remember that the victory and the fame which were brought by your warriors defeating the enemies' elephant army is due to the food which was cultivated by the farmers with their plows. The world will scold only the king for the failure of the seasonal rain, the decrease of the fertility of the land and other artificial harms. Oh king ! If you realize this, avoid the false statements, save the farmer community and do good to the people, your enemies will also obey and praise you. -Vellaikkudi Naahanaar

Purananooru - 16 to 25 (English Translation)

16. A Song About Rajasooya Velvi Seidha Perunarkkilli

With the horses which are good in battle, you are spreading your armors which look like the rainy cloud and sending the army to the wars. You have captured enemies' paddy fields . You have destroyed their houses and burnt them with the woods of the houses as fire woods. You have destroyed the enemies' water sources by sending male elephants. The villages are burning like the red sun . You have a strong army which destroys enemies' lands. You need no helping force to conquer your enemies . You have a sword which has the smell of flesh. You have sweet smelling sandal on your chest. You are like god Murugan in your anger and in appearance. You have burnt enemies' countries which have the ponds with vaalai fishes and aambal plants, the bush with paahal creepers with fruits and sugarcane growing in big, cold fields. Oh lord ! Your elephants also indulge in frightening wars like you. -Paandarangkannanaar

17. A Song About Seramaan Yaanaikkatchey Maandhranjcheral Irumporai

All the people of the country which has Kanniyakumari in the south , Himalayas in the north and blue seas in the east and the west as boundaries and having hills, mountains, forests and towns gather together and praise you. You destroy evils. You rule a righteous rule. You collect one sixth as tax. You send your shining, righteous wheel without any hurdle. You are the successor of those who ruled the whole world. You have coconut trees and paddy fields. Your country has mountains as its fence. You have seashore forest which has sand like the shining moon. You have pools where flame like aambal flowers blossom. You have conquered the cold Thondi port. The elephant without knowing the deep pit which is for catching it, falls into it. The strong elephant which has the killing nature destroys the pit with its tusks. It comes up and lives with its relatives. Like that elephant, you come back and live with your relatives when you are imprisoned. All are praising you. Your enemies think that if they get your love, they can get back their land and wealth. If you see them with anger, they will loose all and have to suffer. They serve you because of your strength and fame. Oh king ! I have come to see you and praise your strength and fame. You have armours which resemble rainy clouds. You have many big elephants which look like mountains so that the bees come for honey. You have a very big army so that the clouds come to take water. Apart from these you have a drum which sounds like the thunder and frightens the poisonous snakes. Oh king ! You are giving to the poor in large quantity. -Kurungkozhiyoorkkizhaar

18. A Song About Thalaiyaalangkaanaththuch Seruvendra Paandiyan Nedunchezhiyan

Oh successor of the kings who ruled the world which is surrounded by the roaring seas by capturing it with their effort and who rooted their fame ! Let your life be up to the last number. Let your life time grow. Oh king of the ancient town which has a group of vaalaifish, tinny aaral fish, big varaal fish and keliru fish which wish to eat the kaanji flowers floating on the water, high walls which touch the sky and fertile land. If you want to get the wealth in the heaven, to conquer all kings, to become the only king of the world and to root your good fame, listen to the noble qualities to rule more. The bodies of the lives cannot live without water. Those who give food to remove the hunger are considered as those who give us lives. Hence the food is the life to the bodies. The water together with land produces food . Those who help for the production of food by cultivating the land with water are eligible for the fame of giving life and body. Though it is a vast land, it will not be of any use if it expects the rain. So Sezhiyaa having the power of fighting ! Don't neglect the followings. Those who store water in the valleys and create water sources alone get the heavenly pleasure and fame. Those who cannot store water for cultivation cannot root their fame in this world. -Pulaviyanaar

19. A Song About Thalaiyaalangkaanaththuch Seruvendra Paandiyan Nedunjchezhiyan

The warriors are many who fought in Thalaiyaalangkaanam where Thamizh kings fought with each other. Yammaa is one who killed many warriors. You are that Yammaa who has a conquering spear. Oh Sezhiyaa ! Your chest is like a big stone which is used by the hunters to catch big tigers. I embraced your chest with love. Like the gathering of the sparrows on the hill , there are many arrows on the body of the elephant . The wounded elephant's hollow trunk which is cut by an arrow rolls on the ground like a plough. The warriors who killed the elephants with their swords are lying dead on the battle field with their fathers. On seeing this , the ladies of the brave family shed tears of pleasure . They wondered that a big fame has come to their family because of the brave death of their husbands and sons. On seeing their braveness Yamaa himself feels shame. In that fearful battle field , you defeat seven kings. The brave chest which I embraced is adorned by pure pearl garland. -Kudapulaviyanaar

20. A Song About Seramaan Yaanaikkatchey Maandharanjcheral Irumporai

It is possible to measure the depth of the big sea, the breadth of the vast world, the direction of the bowing wind and the windless sky, but it is impossible to measure your knowledge, kindness and mercy. The people who are under your righteous rue know only the hotness of the fire which is used for cooking food and the hotness of the red sun. They don't know other hotness like poverty, torture of the enemies etc. They know the beautiful rainbow, but they don't know the enemies' killing bows. They know the plough, but don't know any other weapons. Oh king ! You with your able soldiers capture the countries of your enemies. Only the pregnant ladies of your country wish to eat the soil of your land. Your land is not captured by your enemies. You are having a fort with arrows and a righteous sceptre. Your country has such a safety so that it does not bother about the arrival of the new birds and departure of the old birds. As all the living beings love you, they fear if some harm comes to you. -Kurungkozhiyoorkkizhaar

21. A Song About kaanappereyil Kadandha Ukkirapperuvazhudhi

Oh noble! You are the boundary to the fame which the poets sing. Kaanappereyil has a very deep ahazhi, sky scrapping walls, balconies which look like the stars in the sky, forests through which the rays of the sun cannot penetrate and small forts which cannot be reached. Today it has come to the possession of vazhudhi. Vengai Maarban feels that it cannot be regained like the water which disappears when it falls on the heated iron in the strong blacksmith's work place. You get victory after victory everyday. You are sung by many poets. Let the fame of your enemies disappear who blame you. Let your victorious spear be shine with fame. -Iyoor Moolangkizhaar

22. A Song About Seramaan Yaanaikkatchey Maandharanjcheral Irumporai

The young elephants having moving trunks, majestic walk, ringing bells, long tusks, crescent like foreheads , angry look, broad feet, broad necks like the honey shedding mountains, sweet smelling mad water shedding heads where the bees hum are moving in the elephant shed. Near that place , under the shadow of the white umbrella which is decorated with pearl garlands and which shines like the full moon spreading milk like rays, the warriors those who no swords sleep without worry. Near the battle field , army camps which are built with sugarcane and thatched with hay look like villages where festivals are to be celebrated. There the sound of digging paddy with pestle is heard always. There the noise of the kuravai dance danced by your warriors who are in joy will be sounding like the roaring sea. Oh king who belongs to the vast army camp ! Oh king of Kolli hills, who remove the sorrow of those who come to you , by giving the tributes given by your enemies ! You have an angry look like an angry elephant. You wish only victory always. You have a large quantity of wealth. You give in large quantities so that those who get from you need not go to others for gifts. I came here hearing that the country ruled by Irumporai is like the heaven. I feel happy on seeing you. You get victory in wars. If you save patronage and ethics, there is no death for you. You will get immortal fame. -Kurungkozhiyoorkkizhaar

23. A Song About Thalaiyaalangkaanaththuch Seruvendra Paandiyan Nedunjchezhiyan

The elephants which hated being tied to strong pillars went to the water sources, stirred them and destroyed them. You warriors have sharp arrows and bent bows like that of god Murugan who had worn fragrant kadambaa garland and had a sharp vel which killed Sooran. Your warriors took as much grain as they could and left the rest in vain in the fields itself. The forests cut down by axes and the fire that was lighted in the homes to cook the food were destroyed by the big fire lighted by your warriors. On seeing this, your enemies feared and trembled. You did some more cruelties to your enemies. I knew that you have so much of strength so that your enemies feared to come near you. You have such a big army that the earth cannot bear it. You won the battle which took place in Thalaiyaalangkaanam. You are having a strength like that of Yamma. I came to see you. On my way, I saw a female deer embracing its young one near the poolai bush after loosing its mate which was killed by a tiger. It ate the white flowers of the velai plant. The way through which I came was barren and there was no one. I came through that long path, seeing the sorrowful sight of the female deer. -Kalladanaar

24. A Song About Thalaiyaalangkaanaththuch seruvendra Paandiyan Nedunjchezhiyan

The farmers who were harvesting paddy hated the heat of the sun. the fishers sprang on the clear waves. They had strong shoulders. They drank toddy eagerly which gave them heat. They danced kuravai dance according to the notes. They wore punnai garlands having honey filled flowers. They gave their hands to the ladies who wore bangles on their hands. The seashore forest had fragrant flowers crowded by the bees and had coolness. The ladies wore garlands of mundahaa flowers and shining bangles. They mixed the water of tender palm, tender coconut and sugarcane juice. They drank it and sprang into the sea which was a combination of river water, spring water and rain water. They played and enjoyed there. There were many good towns where various people lived together. The patron Evvi did not save money. He gave it to everybody because of his patronage. His Mizhalai had many water streams. The naaraies ate kendai fishes in the paddy field and slept on the heap of straw. Muththooru of the ancient Velir had fertile lands and elephants wearing golden ornaments. Oh Sezhiyaa having white, victorious umbrella and victorious chariots ! Let your living days increase. Let your enemies' living days decrease and let them die. Like the body which is attached to your life and the life which is related your body, let your sword warriors who are related to your victorious fame say welcome to your victory. Let the people who wish gifts from you, praise your fame. You drink the fragrant , sweet toddy poured into golden cups by the ladies who have worn beautiful bangles and live pleasantly. Oh king ! Wise people say that those who live with fame are really living. Those who born in the vast land and die without fame are not considered as living persons. -Maangudi Marudhan

25. A Song About Paandiyan Nedunjcezhiyan

To remove the darkness in the sky where the stars are shining , the hot sun goes fast. It does not change its nature. The hot sun with the cold moon comes down to the earth. Like the hot sun oh Sezhiyaa! You have killed two kings who have much strength and those who have sworn in the fierce battle field and captured their drums seeing the ladies who are beating their chests and weeping with their spreading black hair because their husbands are killed, you are like the cold moon. On seeing their sorrow, your spear does not spring on your enemies' bodies. It will not kill them. -Kallaadanaar
